BeONCOsup : Belgian Handbook for Oncological Supportive Care

Project duration : 01 January 2023 - 30 April 2024 (16 months)

Lead Coordinator : Sciensano, Belgium

Domain / Area : Prevention, Rehabilitation, psychosocial care, care organisation

Main objectives

In short

With the BeONCOsup-project we want to develop a supporting tool ‘Belgian Handbook for Oncological Supportive Care’ to optimize the provision of supportive care to cancer patients and relatives. Supportive care in cancer encompasses both the management of the symptoms of cancer and the side effects of treatment throughout all stages of cancer.
Minister Frank Vandenbroucke has appointed the Cancer Centre to coordinate the development of the tool in consultation with the Cabinet, the FPS Health and the National Health and Disability Insurance RIZIV/INAMI.

Project summary

The BeONCOsup-project is set up based on recurrent results of different projects of the cancer center, indicating the need to optimize supportive care for cancer patients and relatives:

With the project we want to develop a supporting tool ‘Belgian Handbook for Oncological Supportive Care’ for healthcare professionals in referring cancer patients to appropriate supportive care (needs-based approach). The main objectives of the project are:

  • Developing an exhaustive list of the medical, (onco)psychosocial, palliative, socio-professional and social needs of cancer patients and their relatives
  • Identifying existing supportive care to meet these needs
  • Optimizing access to supportive oncology care for patients and their relative
  • Ensuring equitable access to supportive oncology care

To achieve the objectives of the project, Working Groups (WGs) will be set up for 5 domains of supportive cancer care. The following domains have been proposed:

  • Medical follow-up
  • (Onco)psychosocial care
  • Palliative care
  • Socio-professional integration
  • Social care

The WGs will be organised by domain to discuss the needs of cancer patients with different experts and by speciality to discuss each need in-depth.
